VP of Engineering

Counterpart believes in small businesses and is dedicated to helping them do more with less risk. By pairing leading insurance experts with cutting-edge technology, Counterpart empowers small business owners to grow with confidence. Exceptional underwriters, trusted insurance brokers, and prominent insurance carriers come together on the Counterpart platform to support small businesses by providing AI-driven management and professional liability underwriting and claims services. That’s where you come in…

As a VP of Engineering, you will see your team(s) as your product. You will do so by hiring a world-class team, allocating them to the highest leverage tasks, and putting them in the best position to succeed through training and support. The leader of engineering owns the delivery of product commitments and is always looking to improve productivity. You must coordinate across departments to help scope collaborative goals and ensure that the products that your team delivers accomplish their needs. You will often be given ambiguous ill-defined problems with the implicit goal of gaining clarity and driving execution/direction and customer value.

AS A VP OF ENGINEERING YOU WILL:

  • Lead a team that builds product fast, ships product frequently, and maintains a high quality customer experience.
  • Build, manage, and edit the team to make sure we've always got the right people & structure in place to address the current development needs and future product complexity.
  • Serve as an escalation point for major bugs or technical challenges that can’t be solved by the engineering leads.
  • Dive in as a member of the team to add coding horsepower to accelerate a project - as part of your plan, not as an emergency rescue.
  • Architect systems across the engineering function to help drive results with an eye toward the following:
    • Context - make sure they have the context to deliver results, and why their goals are high impact towards the company’s broader success
    • Vision - make sure the team know what is coming next and why, even if we don’t know how to get there yet
    • Skills - ensure that each team member grows and feels confident in delivery via their technical depth and personal process
    • Processes - make sure that we’re continuously evolving our planning and dev approach to have just enough structure to keep our results on track
  • Nurture a culture of performance in the development process, while allowing for local differences where advantageous through the following:
    • Drive mission, direction, and work across your team, being responsible for the execution towards product delivery.
    • Partner with Product to find the best blend of quality, agility, and urgency to match the goals you help the team shape.
    • Empower your team by offering clear ownership of technical challenges. Lead through exercising and pairing up to show your depth of coding experience.
    • Set expectations for team and individual success. Invest in your team and take action when appropriate.
    • Instill a bias to action.

WE LOOK FOR TEAMMATES WHO HAVE:

  • 7+ years managing an engineering organization at a high growth company.
  • Experience building remote-only companies consisting of both full-time teammates and 3rd party contractors.
  • Ability to comprehend, track, and curate to completion multiple technical initiatives simultaneously.
  • A consistent track record of delivering high-quality software in regular, iterative releases through coordinating a distributed team.
  • Deep experience with people, including recruiting and hiring, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and promoting.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal, and written as part of a distributed team.
  • Experience coordinating and working with stakeholders across the organization.

COUNTERPART'S VALUES

  • Conjoin Expectations - it is the cornerstone of autonomy. Ensure you are aware of what is expected of you and clearly articulate what you expect of others.
  • Speak Boldly & Honestly - the only failure is not learning from mistakes. Don’t cheat yourself and your colleagues of the feedback needed when expectations aren’t being met.
  • Be Entrepreneurial - control your own destiny. Embrace action over perfection while navigating any obstacles that stand in the way of your ultimate goal.
  • Practice Omotenashi (“selfless hospitality”) - trust will follow. Consider every interaction with internal and external partners an opportunity to develop trust by going above and beyond what is expected.
  • Hold Nothing As Sacred - create routines but modify them routinely. Take the time to reflect on where the business is today, where it needs to go, and what you have to change in order to get there.
  • Prioritize Wellness - some things should never be sacrificed. We create an environment that stretches everyone to grow and improve, which is fulfilling, but is only one part of a meaningful life.

We are committed to being a welcoming and inclusive workplace for everyone, and we are intentional about making sure people feel respected, supported and connected at work—regardless of who you are or where you come from. We value and celebrate our differences and we believe being open about who we are allows us to do the best work of our lives.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
