About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to run Coalition’s Scanning Engine and Data Collection team. This is a fun and driven team of engineers ranging from junior to principal who are aligned on a mission and solving extremely challenging problems at internet scale. This includes broadly scanning the entire internet and also deeply scanning all our insurance policy holders and security customers, as well as managing all of our threat intel feed ingestion and backend APIs. This data powers both our decisioning and pricing for insurance underwriting, as well as our attack surface management tool, Coalition Control, for risk management of both policyholders as well as revenue generation as a standalone security product. It’s a big challenge and a fun problem to solve and optimize, and it directly affects the success of our entire business.

The ideal candidate will have good networking fundamentals and experience with running systems at scale. They will also be a strong leader who can bring engineering rigor and help drive a quarterly planning process with good communication and delivery. This is a fully remote role leading a team of which is distributed globally with half in the EU and half in North America.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve Coalition’s industry leading scanning engine to help identify security issues and protect enterprise insurance and security customers.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities to successfully plan, communicate and deliver on product features on time while designing for quality, observability and scalability
  • Provide technical expertise and software engineering guidance to automate processes and improve team efficiency
  • Provide management and mentorship to engineers in order to seek out identification of skill gaps and growth needs
  • Balance managing technical debt with new feature development and business priorities
  • Ensure full software lifecycle instrumentation from requirement ideation to software development to deployment
  • Collaborate with Product and Business staff to balance resources and project schedules
  • Maintain transparent communication across all levels of the organization
  • Actively participate in all phases of growing the engineering organization through recruiting, team building, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7+ years overall software engineering experience with 3+ years experience managing a team of at least 5 people
  • Experience developing and managing teams that build and operate internet-scale solutions; high transaction volume, big data pipelines, persistence, access
  • Strong understanding of computer networking
  • Effective in leading and mentoring staff with various technical backgrounds and expertise
  • Good collaborator with a track record of understanding customer/stakeholder needs and building to solve them
  • Understanding of software development processes with the experience to apply the best type of engineering methodology to fit a situation or team dynamic
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering software and managing projects across one or more teams
  • Technical background to objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues
  • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing priorities
  • Expert knowledge of at least one area of computer science/engineering
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills at all levels
  • Experience with service oriented architectures and distributed systems

Bonus Points

  • Prior experience with insurance or security technologies, internet scanning or vulnerability management
  • In-depth knowledge of AWS infrastructure, CI/CD, and the Atlassian tool suite
  • Experience working in the InfoSec, Tech or Cybersecurity markets
