Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, hello, hiya, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

As a senior Data Privacy Product Manger, you will have well-developed skills in considering different frameworks, then applying them into product development of services which helps us meet and exceed the expectations of our users. This means that you will have to have a good analytical lens to complement collaboration with numerous internal partner teams and work streams, in order to achieve impact through their adoption of your solutions.

You will also have to be good at balancing multiple perspectives to pinpoint challenges and solutions: internal operations that require data to function, as well as bad actors who would manipulate legitimate uses of data for personal gain.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Develop and own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Privacy, including customer consent, cookies, ML data controls and data subject access requests
  • Identify requirements, collaborating with cross-functional teams including privacy engineering, legal, policy, operations, data, and marketing
  • Prioritise development across existing roadmap and incoming requests
  • Plan out adoption timelines with buy-in from internal teams, balancing their immediate needs to deliver impact with long-term sustainability and efficiency
  • Ensure timely delivery by staying ahead of potential risks, unblocking teams in advance
  • Explore all aspects of data privacy functionality from every stakeholder’s perspective to ensure testing and delivery against their needs
  • Support handling privacy incidents & assessing Canva product safety risks
  • Ensure Canva’s values and policies are consistently applied in the way we take action in preserving privacy against bad actors
  • Build a deep understanding of the current data protection mechanisms across Canva to understand existing issues and escalation points.
  • Be an escalation point for all incidents, and investigations including user and government concerns.
  • Collaborate with other data management, governance and security teams to share strategies and best practices, and minimise redundancy.
  • Develop thinking and analysis of data privacy management through multiple lenses, understanding the impacts and tradeoffs of different approaches.
  • Communicate team achievements for visibility and understanding of the risks and impact we have

You're probably a match if

  • You have a proven experience in data privacy, dealing with consent, data sharing, data subject access requires and similar activities.
  • You have a passion for protecting the human right to privacy.
  • You have experience crafting and/or implementing data classification and governance systems, able to contribute both best practices and a culture of innovation.
  • You are able to collaborate with engineering, legal, data, design, operations and other cross-functional teams to achieve big wins.
  • You are an innovator who is willing to roll up their sleeves and get into the weeds.
  • You have the ability to proactively unblock others by looking ahead to ensure problems and scope are crystal clear.
  • You are highly collaborative and effective with the ability to lead by example, and contribute through sensible, thoughtful communication and execution.
  • You are skilled in balancing long-term vision and strategy with timely delivery of outcomes that bring us closer to that vision.
  • You are data driven, but comfortable moving forward even if we don’t have all the information available to us, balancing first-principles reasoning with the data that we do have at hand.

About the team

The mission of Product Managers at Canva is to create the most accessible design tool for every person in the world. We believe that we can improve the world by empowering everyone to design and communicate visually. As a Product Manager at Canva you help set this vision, define what that future looks like, and build the products and features that get us there.

We work across teams of designers, software engineers, marketers and analysts to ensure we're delivering an exceptional experience to all our users. We are responsible for implementing and collaborating on product strategy, road mapping, and prioritisation as our product grows.

It’s our responsibility to see products through their entire lifecycle—from concept through to validation, build, post-launch analytics and iterations.

The Privacy Engineering Team goal is to make Canva the world’s most trusted company by building the tools and systems to ensure our users are informed and in control of how their data is used, and that our products meet our users expectations.

The team is responsible for building a source of truth for user consent and working with our engineers and stakeholders to develop programmatic interfaces of consumption for other Canva services. The team will also focus on the enforcement of our data policies at the scale of Canva and will interface with data specialists across the business to ensure data is used according to the user's preferences.

Our mission is to establish Canva as a privacy-focused company and to provide our users with choice and transparency about their data.
